Survivor Benefits, or Your Own, First

A survivor benefit and your own retirement benefit are two different things, and you do not have to claim them at the same time. You can take one now and switch to the other later. Choosing the order well is one of the few decisions after a death that is worth real money, and it is almost never explained.
