Life Insurance Claims 101

Usually simpler than you fear.

6 min read

In short

If a policy exists, the claim is usually simpler than feared: a form, a certified death certificate, and the policy number. Most clean claims pay within weeks. The harder part is finding the policies. People carry coverage they never mentioned.

Finding every policy

Check files, the safe deposit box, and bank statements for premium payments.

Ask the employer about group life. Check loan paperwork for credit life riders.

Use the free NAIC Life Insurance Policy Locator; insurers must check their records.

Look for burial policies sold separately.

How a claim goes

Call the insurer or start online. Submit the form and a certified certificate.

Each beneficiary files their own portion.

Take the lump sum unless you fully understand the alternative.

Clean claims commonly pay in 2 to 6 weeks.

When it is not simple

Policies inside the two year contestability window get reviewed harder. Lapsed premiums invite disputes.

No named beneficiary means the estate may receive the money, which is slower.

If an insurer stalls, your state insurance department takes complaints, and insurers know it.

Watch-outs

  • The payout is generally not income taxable, but interest earned on it can be.
  • You are entitled to the full sum; do not accept a retained asset account without understanding it.
